Hi all! It’s been a while but I just wanted to share a really cool upcoming event where you can explore gardens in the City while riding a bike with a group of some cool folks! More information, from the Bicycle Coalition below. The Coalition is a group of some awesome advocates promoting safer, more enjoyable streets and rides for bicyclists. Join us and become a member here!

If you’re interested in exploring Philadelphia’s vibrant urban farms and gardens, we have the perfect ride for you! The 14th annual Urban Farm Bike Ride will be traveling through Philly on Saturday, October 5th.

The Bicycle Coalition is serving as a Community Sponsor of the ride this year and will be along for the ride. We’ll be visiting some of Philadelphia’s beautiful and rich urban farms and gardens, focusing on those that have been endangered of being lost and have found innovative ways of securing their land. Each route will visit different farms and gardens.

The Urban Farm Bike Ride was started 14 years ago as a way to bring together people who are interested in healthy eating, healthy physical activity, and being outdoors, as well as building community.

This ride offers two length options: one route is about 17 miles, while the other is about 21 miles. Both routes ride on Philly’s streets, and in bike lanes or on trails when possible. As you can experience on this ride, quality bike infrastructure and food access are issues that are linked. You should feel confident riding in city traffic on roads shared with cars, although riding in a visible large group on a less-busy Saturday morning should make for a pleasant ride.

Check-in for the ride is at 7:45 a.m. at the Philadelphia Brewing Company (2440 Frankford Avenue), with rides starting at 8:15 a.m. Rides end by 2 pm, with a free beer and pizza afterwards. Please say hello to us at the after-party!

The ride benefits the nonprofit organization founded by the Weavers Way Co-op, FOOD MOXIE. We’re excited to be partnering with another organization that works to improve the health of Philadelphia’s communities. To learn more about the ride and register, click here.
